It's Familial Mediterranean Fever which generally affects people of Mediterranean descent...Arabs, Turks, North Africans, Greeks etc. ...all those areas my ancestors passed through before their unsuccessful and ill-advised arrival in Europe ...it's related to lupus, which runs in my family, too ...as I understand it, lupus occurs when somebody's immune system freaks out and attacks its own tissues whereas with FMF the lucky person's immune system massively over-reacts to every little illness or injury with a huge inflammatory response...I always wondered why I seemed to be in ten times more pain than a normal person over relatively minor things...although nobody realised I had it until I came down with a related, but separate condition...as much of a pain in the arse it all is, I'm lucky I did come down with the other thing (a chronic infection; most of us have that...antibiotics and ear drops, oh joy!) because if I hadn't I wouldn't have found out what I had and might have croaked in a spectacularly horrible way like my great-uncle did (of kidney failure).

Anyway, sorry...I've prattled on about FMF from time to time in my journal but I'd imagine those of you with sense skip those entries ;) Or I'd hope so....

But to sum it up, it's also good they caught it because after being taken for a hypochondriac for years it's nice to finally have doctors who treat me like a human and prescribe things (now that we know what it is) that actually help...antibiotics, colchicine, naproxen etc.

And I heal like a maniac, or an alien. I had a big big metal bar put in my ear on Friday afternoon and it's almost healed now. Already. Weird, eh?


Enough of that. It sucks that you live in the next state over but with the stupid lake it's quite a ways (especially for two college students). It would be so much fun to hang out and go drool at the MAC store. :)

That's so interesting. I never heard of that before. Most diseases seem to have a trade off. Your body overreacts to injury, but it also heals faster. It always amazes me how genetic disorders have a good side and a bad side.

I'm sorry if I didn't read about it beforehand. I can't believe I missed an entries relating to that.

What state are you in?

Oh, BUT ...this is a rare illness here (even though there are bazillions of people of Mediterranean descent in the U.S.) ...but in North Africa and Turkey and Arab populations, who are the major groups who have it...it's generally between 1 in 100 or 1 in 75 people have it. So who knows....lol!
